Dr Erik Johnson - The search for the perfect bead filtration system - The Aquadyne

Forced Air Bead Cleansing Systems - Standard Equipment on Models - 1.1B and 2.2B

Boosts Total Biological Filtration Capacity Approximately 30%
The Dyna~max forced air cleansisng allows thorough washing of bead media through a significant increase in turbulence of media prior to backwashing. The forced air washing, completely breaks up the entire media bed and frees all fine materials that may otherwise remain suspended in the media for further biodegrading.

Reduces the Water Necessary to Backwash by as much as 80%
During a normal non air-assisted backwash cycle, the Model 4.4 would typically require between 200 and 300 gallons of water to effectively clean the filter of waste. With the Dyna~max system you can backwash the same filter with as little as 60 gallons of water. This is most desirable for those wishing to install a larger filter on a pond of a lesser volume than the filter is rated for, because very little make-up water has to be added to the pond after a backwash cycle and a much larger fish load can be maintained in a smaller environment, while greatly entending the time between backwashing.

The Maximum Pond Size shown indicates the maximum pond size for greatest biological effeciency of a given system. Pond size can also be significantly smaller than the maximum rating. By using a larger system on a smaller pond, you will only further increase the biological cleanliness of the pond environment. Likewise, the pond could also be slightly larger than the rating on a system provided that there was not a significant fish load.

The Minimum Flow Rates indicated in the chart indicate the minimum flow rates required to backwash or advanced backwash the system. Flow rates during the normal filter cycle can be significantly slower than indicated in the chart. However, during the backwash cycle, you must have the ability to increase the flow to the minimum rating for a proper backwash. Often the use of a two speed pump will allow you to run a very slow flow rate with a lower power consumption while filtering, and only use the less economical high speed for backwashing. The maximum flow rates listed are a cross section of two factors. Mechanical control head port size for effecient flow without significant restriction, and contaminated water contact exposure to the billions of beneficial bacteria residing within the filter. Without a doubt, slower flow during the filter cycle is better, but, a faster flow rate also places the recirculating water in contact with the media more frequently, netting near identical nitrification results.

The Maximum Pressure Rating all Aquadyne systems is a whopping 50 PSI ! --- We actually consider this a non issue, because the Central Diffuser Column on our filter is so effecient and non-restrictive that you would have to install a 5HP pump and have the filter half clogged to put 50PSI on the tank. This simply would not occur in any practical application so we consider it just a perk. However, you should install a water pump that most nearly matches the performance rating of the filter that you are choosing. As a caution, there have been instances where a pump was arbitrarily chosen because of head pressure without the consideration of water volume. This can potentially cause a tank gasket to blow out. For example, if you were choosing a Model 2.2 or 2.2B, the recommended water flow rate for maximum filtration effeciency is between 1000 and 4000 gallons per hour. That is not to say that the filter would not perform well at 5000 gph. BUT, what some contractors tend to do is use high head swimming pool pumps on fish ponds because they are cheaper to install. The basic deal is that the average 1Hp swimming pool pump can pump about 5000 to 7000 gallons per hour, which is not the real problem. The real problem is that when a filter begins to load up with fish waste and debris this swimming pool pump with its high head impeller tries to maintain this high rate of water flow which in turn can put excessive pressures on a filter tank which can cause gaskets to leak. High head swimming pool pumps also cause other problems as well, but we will discuss this later. As always, we are available to answerany confusions that you may have when making an equipment choice.

On The Other Hand you should be aware that some filter manufacturers use a technique called spin welding to attach fittings to their tanks, and thin tank wall construction, these tanks can only be rated at pressures of around 15 PSI Max. This is not sufficient for medium head pumps capable of any decent flow rate. We do not use these substandard manufacturing practices.
