Genesyz
About Genesyz
Aeromonas is a big problem in all forms of aquaculture be it in a goldfish pond, Koi pond or a commercial fish farm. A highly respected American Aquaculture company have been solving the same problem in commercial fish farms for years and now through a unique initiative the solution that has revolutionized the aquaculture industry's available to Koi and pond Keepers in the UK.
The new product is called Genesyz , it contains no chemicals, no medications and no antibiotics of any kind. It is a proprietary, internationally patented organic preparation of non-pathogenic proprietary bacteria, enzymes and micro-nutrients and it works on the established principle of an accepted scientific process widely known in commercial livestock management called Competitive Exclusion.
HOW GENESYZ WORKS?
Through extensive research and development the manufacturers discovered that pathogenic bacteria in general and the dreaded Aeromonas and Pseudomonas strains of pathogenic bacteria in particular, consume a specific type of food.
It was also discovered that when a competing non-pathogenic bacteria, in this case Genesyz, is introduced into an aquatic environment infected with pathogenic bacteria the Genesyz aggressively competes with the Aeromonas and other pathogens for the available food and because the introduced Genesyz is present in bigger numbers it consumes all the available food and the Aeromonas and other pathogens quite simply starved to death.
And it gets better. Since Genesyz consumes only the food source of pathogenic bacteria, the vital nitrifying bacteria, in your filtration systems for example, which feed on a different nutrition source than the pathogens remain completely unaffected. The even better part is that this process is totally demonstrable simply by measuring the bacteria counts before and after.
Independent laboratories throughout the USA have done this and more recently in the UK so real performance data is available and in all cases the results are the same - IT WORKS and it can be proved that Genesyz works.
HOW TO USE GENESYZ?
The Genesyz dosing protocol requires an initial dose, a consolidation dose and then weekly maintenance doses. These dose levels vary with temperature which are indicated below, we have also prepared the table below to give you an approximate cost for a full year treatment.
The standard Genesyz dose rate is 25mls per 1000 gallons at water temps over 68 °F (20 °C). Following the protocol below:
- Initial dose - 25 ml per 1000 gallons for three doses, one every three days
- Consolidation Dose - 25 ml per 1000 gallons one dose per week for two weeks
- Maintenance Dose - 12.5 ml per 1000 gallons every week
The dosage rates for Genesyzvaries with temperature so you need to increase the dose based on the following guidelines:
- For cooler water temperature in the ranges 50 °F (10 °C) to 62 °F (14 °C) - double the dose
- For medium water temperatures in the ranges 63 °F (15 °C) to 68 °F (20 °C) - 1.5 times the dose
HOW MUCH DOES GENESYZ COST?
So what is the cost of this magic potion I hear you all squeal? Well one thing is for sure, it is cheaper than replacing dead Koi, but the price of eradicating the threat of Aeromonas in your pond depends on the size of your pond but the table below indicates how much you need for the size of your pond and the annual cost. I think any reasonable person would conclude that £240 to treat a 5000 gallon pond for the entire year, which incidentally is less than the price of a single Koi, is a fair price to pay.
The bottom line is simply the question - if you have a 6000 gallon Koi pond is it worth under £3OO a year to minimize the risk posed by one of the biggest Koi killers? One final thought while you may think "it'll never happen to me", "my pond is fine," Genesyz for good Koi Keepers, is really a form of insurance, and like all insurance while none of us like paying for it, if or when the unthinkable does happen and we really do need it we are usually glad we had it!!?? Based on the dramatic success of Genesyz and the experiences of Koi and pond keepers all over the USA it's clear that Genesyz is one of the most important products ever to emerge in fish keeping.
| Pond Size in UK gallons | Approx Genesyz Usage | Total Annual Cost* |
| 500 Gallons | 500 ml (1/2 litre) | £25 |
| 1000 Gallons | 1000 ml (1 litre) | £50 |
| 2500 Gallons | 2000 ml (2 litres) | £120 |
| 5000 Gallons | 5000 ml (5 litres) | £240 |
| 7500 Gallons | 7500 ml (7.5 litres) | £360 |
| 10000 Gallons | 10000 ml (10 litres) | £480 |
*Genesyz dose rates are based on water temperatures - the lower the temperature the more Genesyz required and vice versa. The total amount of Genesyz required will vary from area to area, pond to pond and the levels of Aeromonas present so the above prices are an approximate guide only and calculated based on average UK water temperatures.
FAQ'S
Q: I hear that Total Alkalinity is important to Genesyz
A: Yes, very much so. But remember Total Alkalinity is VERY IMPORTANT to all the beneficial bacteria in our ponds. Total Alkalinity is the "backbone" for our pond to function. Total Alkalinity is the measurement of calcium carbonate in the water. Without a reasonable Total Alkalinity count, none of the beneficial bacteria will function properly. ALL biological products, such as Genesyz require T.A. to do their jobs. Also your nitrifying bacteria in your biofilter require T.A. to oxidize ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate.
Did you know that for every gram of ammonia that is processed inyour biofilter, 2.5 grams of calcium carbonate is consumed by the biofilter. The minimum T.A. count for a pond is 80. Below 80, bacteria become sluggish and do not perform properly. A count of 100 or 120 is really needed for the biofilter or probiotics to function properly. It is VERY IMPORTANT to know your Total Alkalinity count. See your dealer to get a Total Alkalinity test kit.
Q: Can I use my U.V. Light when treating with Genesyz?
A: You should turn off your U.V. Light when treating with Genesyz for the first five initial treatments only. It is OK to turn the U.V. Light back on for the rest of the season once you get into the "Maintenance" treatment.
Q: How long do I treat with Genesyz?
A: You start treating with Genesyz in the Springtime once the water temp reaches 50 to 52 degrees. If you had treated with Genesyz the previous year you would still "start over" and do the five initial treatments at full dosage rate, then go into the "Maintenance" program. You should continue the "Maintenance" program the entire season until the water temp drops back into the low 50 degree area.
Q: I have heard that water temperature affects the dosage rate. Is that true?
A: Yes. Water temp does have an affect on the dosage rate. This is because the Genesyz bacteria is not as active (or hungry) at the lower water temps.
Q: Can I use salt when treating with Genesyz?
A: Yes. Genesyz works equally well in fresh or salt water.
Q: Can I use Genesyz while treating with other pond products?
A: Genesyz can be used while treating your pond with most other products. Other "probiotics" are OK to use at the same time. This is because no other "probiotic" (bacterial based product) consumes the same "nutrients" as Genesyz, therefore they do not compete with each other.
If you are going to treat your pond with a chemical product such as a parasite treatment, wait until you have completed the first 5 initial treatment of Genesyz. Most chemical based products will kill the Genesyz bacteria, but once you are into the "maintenance program" of Genesyz, that's OK. This is due to the fact that Genesyz only lives in your pond for 3 to 4 days (it has gone through it's complete life cycle at that point). And in the "maintenance program" you are simply keeping the bad "nutrient" level down so that Aeromonas does not return.
If you kill the Genesyz bacteria one week during the "maintenance program" the bad "nutrients" will not build back up that quickly. Simply continue on with the "maintenance program" after treating with your chemical product.
Do not use liquid antibiotics during the "initial treatment" period with Genesyz.
Q: I currently have a Aeromonas problem, should I increase the Genesyz dosage and is that safe to do?
A: We strongly recommend that you double the dosage rae if you have a existing Aeromonas problem. By doubling the dosage rate, you will speed up the rate that the Genesyz will consume the bad "nutrients" from the pond water, thus starving out the Aeromonas sooner.
It is almost impossible to overdose with Genesyz . I have dosedmy hospital tank, with 9 Koi in it, at the rate of 200ml (over 6 oz.)/1,000 gallons for a period of three weeks with no affect on the fish or the biofilter. Also, by increasing the dosage rate during an existing Aeromonas problem, Genesyz bacteria will displace the Aeromonas bacteria off the ulcer or infected area of the fish.
You will see the infected area start to "white over" soon after treatment is started. BUT, let me say this, if the ulcer is in an advanced state (into the "meat" of the fish), you should treat that fish with antibiotics because most likely that Aeromonas bacteria has gotten into it's bloodstream.
Q: Does Genesyz have any affect on my biofilter?
A: No, not at all. The Genesyz bacteria do not consume ammonia or nitrites, therefore they do not compete with your filter.
